PBOLUS

pBolus is employed in radiation therapy when the patient requires the full prescription dose on the skin surface. The pBolus is a tissue equivalent material that is applied to the patient’s skin to compensate for the treatment beam’s build-up region. Currently, a diverse array of Bolus materials, such as thermoplastic sheets, pellets, and gel slabs (Superflab), are in use throughout Australia. input:
output:In general, the objective is for the pBolus to be well-adhered to the patient’s skin, resulting in minimal air gaps, be of uniform density and thickness, be reproducible to position, and not cause discomfort to the patient during the creation or daily positioning of the pBolus. input:
output:It has been reported in the literature that 3D printing enables the creation of tissue equivalent pBolus of detailed volumetric structures that are defined on the CT image data. This allows for the creation of pBolus in a reproducible manner, allowing for the creation of intricate shapes that closely approximate the patient’s skin.input:
output:PBOLUS CUSTOMIZED FOR THE PATIENT

3D One has successfully developed a streamlined, additive manufacturing process that leverages advanced 3D design and 3D printing innovations. This process involves the creation of a customized pBolus that is based on an accurate map of the patient’s required radiation therapy treatment area. This pBolus enables the delivery of an optimal skin dose, thereby minimizing the risk to healthy tissues. input:
output:The 3D One pBolus is a flexible thermoplastic urethane (TPU) device that is designed from a patient’s CT scan. The spatial accuracy is significantly higher than that of proprietary alternatives, as it is achieved without air gaps. A Planning CT confirmed that the TPU attenuates in a manner similar to water.
