output:Granulocyte esterases are detected by the test regarding leukocytes. The indoxyl ester is cleaved by these esterases, and the resulting indoxyl reacts with a diazonium salt to generate a violet dye. If the leukocytes have been lysed, leukocyte esterase results may be positive in the absence of observable cells. Occasionally, positive results may be observed in random specimens from females as a result of contamination by vaginal discharge. Decreased test results may result from elevated glucose concentrations (55 mmol/L-110 mmol/L) or high specific gravity. Reduced reactivity may result from the presence of cephalexin, cephalothin, or tetracycline, while elevated levels of the drug may induce a false negative reaction.
