Total Knee Prosthesis

TKA fails to meet the same level of patient satisfaction as total hip replacement, as fewer knee patients are able to obtain a "forgotten joint" replacement. Studies indicate that approximately 20% of TKA patients are dissatisfied. Anterior knee pain and persistent swelling may be the consequence of excessive A/P motion. The knee is susceptible to A/P instability during the most frequently encountered functional activities in numerous P/S designs, as the stabilizing mechanism only engages after 70-80° of flexion.



SATISFACTION OF THE PATIENT

In a study in which patients had a conventional CR or PS in one knee and a medially stabilized device in the other, 76% preferred the knee with the "ball in socket" medial compartment. The following was reported by patients:
