Description
The MUC 1 antigen is a mucin-type glycoprotein that is membrane-anchored and found in the epithelial cells of specific organs, including the breast, lung, ovary, pancreas, and colon.1. The apoprotein of the MUC 1 mucin is composed of a transmembrane domain, a cytoplasmic domain, and an extracellular carbohydrate-rich domain. The extracellular domain is distinguished by polymorphism in the number of a 20 amino acid tandem repeat (VNTR polymorphism). Ma695 serves as the catcher antibody, recognizing a sialylated carbohydrate epitope expressed on the MUC 1 antigen, while Ma552 serves as the tracer antibody, targeting the PDTRPAPG region of the protein core2-5. The CA15-3 EIA is based on these two mouse monoclonal antibodies.Tumor cells secrete the MUC 1 breast cancer mucin (CA15-3 antigen), which is a well-established serological marker for the monitoring of the clinical course of breast cancer patients.
