This enables the efficient and adaptable coupling of multiple independent light sources, each of which is optimized for a distinct field of view, wavelength, polarization state, and/or other property. The principal, on-axis, filter cube can be precisely and easily steered in-situ, ensuring that the photons are delivered to the exact location where they are required, in contrast to competing systems. Illumination areas can be controlled to a diameter of several microns using LEDs and diffraction-limited spots using lasers, or full field.input:
