Interphalangeal prostheses are intended to preserve bone, minimize disruption to the origins and insertions of the collateral ligaments, and replicate the anatomic joint surfaces. When the soft tissues are well-preserved, the kinematic behavior closely resembles that of a typical joint.
The TI6AI4V (Grade 5) surface articulates to create a semi-constrained prosthetic replacement for the proximal interphalangeal joint. The implant is available in five sizes, each of which can be used in either the right or left hand. In order to facilitate bone preparation, a variety of trial sizers are accessible for each implant type.
The PIP is approved for use with or without cement. Consequently, it is optional to use cement.
