The TSE Systems Indirect Gas Calorimetry module calculates critical metabolic parameters, such as the respiratory exchange rate (RER) and energy expenditure (EE), by measuring the animal’s oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. Specialized isotope sensors, such as those for 13C, can be employed to monitor substrate utilization (fat vs. carbohydrate catabolism).input:
output:The ClimateBoard module, which is an optional addition to the home cage, provides continuous monitoring of the temperature and humidity environment. This enables the precise monitoring of animal welfare and the future refinement of co-housed animal studies, as well as the transition to a “direct calorimetry” application. Additionally, continuous movement monitoring can be incorporated in conjunction with the new optional InfraMot module.input:
output:Phenomaster provides a variety of gas sensor configurations that vary in terms of the speed of measurement and the resolution of time. In the economical high-speed Multiplex mode, where multiple cages share a sensor pair for O2 and CO2, we employ a combination of a new (MOPO) magneto-optical paramagnetic oxygen sensor with a T90 of 1.3 seconds and a new (NDIR) optimized optical near-infrared CO2 photometer detector with a T90 of 2.5 seconds. Both are maintenance-free and exhibit minimal drift (less than 1% per week of sensor range). Optionally, the NDIR can be further configured to simultaneously provide 13C isotope and CH4 methane data. With a measurement time of 15 seconds per cage, this combination can detect changes in O2 and CO2 in the low ppm range at flow rates ranging from 0.34 to 100 L/minute, resulting in 99% of the final signal detected. It is crucial to note that the speed of measurement is not contingent upon the number of cages in the system.
